Expert Guidance

What happened to you,
and what to do right now.

Each scenario below is written by the specialist who treats it — in plain language, without the waiting room.

Same day

"I bit down on something and heard a crack."

Cracked Tooth

A crack can range from a hairline fracture to a split — and the difference matters for treatment. Rinse with warm water and avoid biting on that side. Don't take aspirin directly on the tooth. We'll do a transillumination exam and targeted X-ray to see how deep it goes, then walk you through your options: bonding, a crown, or in rare cases, extraction. Most cracked teeth are saved.

What to do right now

  1. Rinse with warm water — no ice directly on the tooth
  2. Avoid chewing on that side until you're seen
  3. Over-the-counter ibuprofen for pain (if no contraindications)
  4. Call or book — we'll see you within the hour

Urgent — today

"There's a throbbing pain that won't stop, and my face is swelling."

Dental Abscess

An abscess is an infection that doesn't resolve on its own — it needs drainage and antibiotics. The swelling you're feeling is your body trying to wall off the bacteria. Do not apply heat to the area. If swelling is spreading toward your eye or throat, go to an ER first. Otherwise, come to us immediately. We'll drain the abscess, prescribe antibiotics, and discuss whether a root canal or extraction is the right path.

What to do right now

  1. Do not apply heat — it spreads infection
  2. Rinse gently with warm salt water
  3. Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain
  4. If swelling reaches your eye or throat, call 911 first
  5. Otherwise, come in now — this needs same-day treatment

Within 30 minutes

"My child fell and a tooth came completely out."

Knocked-Out Tooth

For a permanent tooth, the next 30 minutes are critical. Find the tooth, hold it by the crown (not the root), and rinse it gently — don't scrub. If possible, reinsert it into the socket and have your child bite down gently on gauze. If that's not possible, keep it in milk or between the cheek and gum. For a baby tooth, do not reimplant — but still come in so we can assess the socket and neighboring teeth.

What to do right now

  1. Find the tooth — hold by the crown, never the root
  2. Rinse gently with milk or saline, do not scrub
  3. Permanent tooth: try to reinsert into socket, bite on gauze
  4. If not possible: store in milk or between cheek and gum
  5. Baby tooth: do NOT reimplant — call us immediately
  6. Get here within 30 minutes for best chance of saving it

Today

"My crown popped off mid-dinner. The tooth underneath is sensitive."

Lost Crown or Filling

The exposed tooth structure is vulnerable to temperature, pressure, and bacteria. If you have the crown, keep it — we can often re-cement it the same day. Until you're seen, you can use dental cement from a pharmacy to temporarily reseat it, or cover the tooth with sugarless gum. Avoid sticky or hard foods. The sensitivity you're feeling is normal — the nerve is exposed. We'll assess whether re-cementation, a new crown, or further treatment is needed.

What to do right now

  1. Keep the crown — don't throw it away
  2. Rinse the crown and tooth gently
  3. Temporary fix: dental cement (pharmacy) or sugarless gum
  4. Avoid sticky, hard, or very hot/cold foods
  5. Come in today — re-cementation is often a 30-minute visit

Today

"A wire snapped and it's poking into my cheek."

Broken Braces Wire

A poking wire is painful and can cause ulcers if left unaddressed. You can temporarily bend the wire away from soft tissue using a pencil eraser or the back of a spoon. Dental wax pressed over the sharp end provides immediate relief. Do not try to cut the wire yourself — you risk swallowing or inhaling the piece. Come in and we'll trim, tuck, or replace the wire. If a bracket has come off, keep it and bring it with you.

What to do right now

  1. Use a pencil eraser to gently push the wire flat
  2. Cover the sharp end with orthodontic wax
  3. Do not cut the wire yourself
  4. Soft foods only until you're seen
  5. Bring any loose brackets — don't throw them away
